Bethleem (sive Bethlehem; Arabice: بيت لحم Bayt Laḥm, Hebraice ביתלחם Bet léḥem / Bet láḥem, Graece Βηϑλεέμ) est oppidum iuxta urbem Hierosolyma situm, quod locus natalis Iesu Christi et antecessoris David Regis putatur. Lingua Hebraica nomen significat 'Domus Panis', aptum civitati natalicii Panis Angelici. Arabice potius significat 'Domus Carnis', scilicet eius qui dedit carnem suam in salute hominum. Vera autem origo fortasse in nomine dei pagani Dachi (Accadice: Laḫmu) restat. Hic sub Ecclesia Nativitatis (saeculi VI) invenitur antrum nativitatis Iesu, locus ubi, secundum scripturas, Maria "peperit filium suum primogenitum; et pannis eum involvit et reclinavit eum in praesepio, quia non erat eis locus in deversorio." (Lc 2:7) Hic etiam Sanctus Hieronymus in altera caverna habitavit, et hic scripsit Biblia Vulgata.


Iam propheta Michaea scripsit (Mich. 5:2): "et tu Bethleem Ephrata parvulus es in milibus Iuda ex te mihi egredietur qui sit dominator in Israhel et egressus eius ab initio a diebus aeternitatis."
