Zingiberaceae sunt familia plantarum florentium quae in aromaticis herbis perennibus cum horizontalibus tuberosisve rhizomatibus serpentibus consistit, circa quinquaginta duo genera et plus 1300 species in tropicis Africa, Asia, et Americis comprehendens.
Multae harum specierum sunt gravissimae plantae ornamentales, condimenta, vel plantae medicinales. Genera ornamentales includunt zingiber conchiforme (Alpiniam), tulipam Siamensem vel aestivalem (Curcumam alismatifoliam), Globbam, lilium zingibericum (Hedychium), Kaempferiam, zingiber faciforme (Nicolaiam), Renealmiam, et zingiber verum (Zingiber). Condimenta includunt Amomum, Curcumam, Elettaria, myoga (Zingiber mioga), grana paradisi (Aframomum melegueta), Zingiber, et zingiber Siamense (Alpiniam galangam, et alia).
Zingiberaceae pantropicae sunt. Inveniuntur in torridis Africae, Asiae, et Americarum regionibus, diversitate maxima in Asia Meridiana et Orientali.
Genera huius familiae sunt plantae herbaceae, foliis distichis vaginis basalibus quae imbricatae pseudocaulem conformant. Plantae sunt liberae vel epiphyticae. Flores sunt hermaphroditae, usitate admodum zygomorphae, cymosis inflorescentiis determinatis, a conspicuis bracteis torsivis subtentis. Perianthum consistit in duobus verticillis, calice tubulare connato, et corolla tubulare, uno lobo maiore quam aliis duobus. Flos habet duo staminodia (stamina sterilia) coniuncta, quae labeum petaloideum typice conformant, et solum unum stamen fertile. Ovarium est inferius, duobus nectariis in apice et stigmate infundibuliforme.
Alia genera, praecipue Alpinia et Hedychium, olea essentialia effundunt quae in fabrica odoris unguentique adhibentur.
