Fons Arethusae


Fons Arethusae est fons emanans in insula Ortygia Syracusis in Sicilia sita. Antiquitus crediderunt[1] eius aquam potabilem ex Alpheo, flumine Arcadico, in Siciliam resurgere, postquam sub mari Ionio longo itinere fluxerat ita ut cum aqua marina non misceretur. Poculum enim Olympiae torrenti aquae quondam raptum Syracusis prope fontem inventum esse contendebant. Quorum ineptias postea Polybius et Strabo refellebant. Secundum fabulam aetiologicam nympha Arethusa a flumine Alpheo persecuta, Artemide adiuvante et in aquas mutante, amplexum dei ita effugisse dicebatur.


Nonnulli poetae moderni quoque in carminibus suis mentionem eius faciunt, e.g. Ioannes Miltonus in opere Lycidas et Alexander Pope in The Dunciad.
